How to design your bedroom for better sleep

There are few routines at home that feel more like a ritual than bedtime. A late-night errand parade can take many forms, but it’s always meant to reduce the hustle and bustle of everyday life to something quieter. But if your bedroom isn’t set up for relaxation, it’s hard to drift gently into sleep — or find the relief you crave.

“The perfect bedroom provides an environment for rest, positivity, and relaxation,” says interior designer Natalie Karim. “[It] should feel like your favorite hotel suite but with personal items like a few picture frames, a nice candle, and a book.”

Renovating an intimate space like your bedroom can redefine your view of comfort. Changing even the little things can have a huge impact on your sleep. From using a new mattress to disposal screens, here are eight ways to make your bedroom a place you look forward to every night.

Invest seriously in a quality mattress

When was the last time you changed your mattress? If you can’t remember (or can, but sometimes do remember), maybe it’s time . It’s common to replace the mattress every 7-10 years , but it’s also important to listen to your body beforehand. Do you suffer from back pain or general discomfort in bed? Do you wake up feeling anxious? Do you sleep better at night when you travel, and not just because it’s a vacation? These are all signs that something is going on where you sleep.

“The mattress is the most important component of a good night’s sleep,” says Karim. “My first recommendation is to buy from a company that has a solid, long-term reputation, such as Stearns and Foster .” There are many factors to consider such as height, sleeping pattern and level of support.

Stearns and Foster Reserve Hepburn mattress is an option that you can customize to meet those needs with options like firm or plush and adding a pillow case. In addition, exclusively designed foams and coils work together to provide support and pressure relief; riveted handles make it easy to move; And the plush filling keeps it looking good for years.

Combine lighting in layers

Finding ways to reduce unwanted bedroom lighting at night will make sleeping a lot easier. Look for a window treatment that blocks outside light at night but not during the day: Cream suggests lightweight curtains or Roman shades in a pretty fabric with a darker lining behind.

For indoor lighting, Karim suggests a mix, from table lamps and reading lamps to recessed lamps or floating chandeliers. Try low-wattage bulbs to keep the mood relaxed, or opt for lampshades that diffuse brightness. Dimming devices are useful in the bedroom, as are smart bulbs that respond to voice commands or phone app commands to dim things.

Three-way switches allow you to control a headlight or other electrical device from two different locations in the room. So, if you have one next to the bed, you don’t have to get up to turn off the light. But Karim says, “If you had to choose only a few light sources, I think table lamps and chandeliers would be ideal.”

Bring soothing scents

Chamomile. Lavender. Cedar. Ylang Ylang. Whether it’s a smoked glass candle, a beautiful ceramic incense holder, or an elegant stone diffuser, calming scents are great in the bedroom for their anti-stress and anxiety properties. (It’s also a good idea to have fresh refills for a sweet home fragrance these days.)

“It’s so relaxing to light a scented candle in the bedroom,” says Karim, noting that it changes its scent with the seasons—richer in winter and lighter and wetter in summer. She also loves diffusers, but since the scent lasts longer, she usually chooses something lighter like jasmine. She also occasionally enjoys arranging fragrant flowers to “decorate the place”.

Pay attention to the bed

“Bed linen is important for good sleep and interior design,” Karim says. But the endless possibilities of sheets can be astounding—so do some research on what’s most comfortable for your sleep schedule.

The Better Sleep Council says that the best sleeping temperature for most people is around 65 degrees. It is important to pay attention to linens that will help you achieve the perfect figure. So try cooler sheets like percale or linen if you’re “warming” and something warmer like flannel if you’re “cooling.” Karim recommends having at least two sets of zeros so you always have them on hand. (And: Thread count, it doesn’t matter! Just choose something comfortable and soft, she says.)

The area around your bed is just as important as the bed itself, as adding a soothing foot rug or tatami mat provides a soft landing cushion and means comfy feet won’t immediately hit cold floors.

Spring for soothing colors for you

A bedroom’s color scheme (as well as lighting) not only sets the mood for furniture and accents, but can also influence your emotions and your everyday life. But calm does not always mean light – depending on what you prefer, it is sometimes pleasant and bright, atmospheric or rich in contrast.

If you want something simple and versatile, colors like blush or white will do. Alternatively, dark colors such as emerald green, navy blue, and soft black provide a relaxing and calming effect. And if you prefer something that gets you more energetic in the morning, yellow and even red can work well in small doses.

Kraiem leans towards more traditional tones such as blues, ivory, teal, purple and gray.

In most cases, light-coloured sheets and duvet covers are preferred. “The white and ivory sheets are classic and make the bed look crisp and clean,” she explains, adding that if you prefer something a bit more special, subtle details or edges can add interest. For a variety of colors and styles, she says she relies on luxury hotel linens.

Decompress clutter to decompress

Karim finds that chaos and organization go hand in hand with a good night’s sleep. “The bedroom should be quiet to remove any kind of anxiety.” Find a home for books and lodging, and place baskets or boxes strategically so that clothes are difficult to toss on the floor. Try checking the electronics on the door. This also means that there are no TVs in the bedroom. A course may be offered at a distance you didn’t know you were longing for. (But if you must, consider making it concealable, perhaps in a closet or behind a curtain.)

No matter how tiring the morning is, a tidy bed is more tempting to crawl into at the end of the day.

Consider placement and size

“I love finding balance in bedrooms where the bed is always the focal point.”

Karim believes that harmony and harmony are important in the place where you sleep. “I like to find balance in bedrooms, where the bed is always the focal point,” she says. Bed height is especially important. It should be in proportion to your height so that you feel on the floor – not too low or too high – when lying down. And it must be suitable for the size of the room; Higher ceilings can provide a taller frame and smaller spaces benefit from a lower profile.

Comfort should also be your top priority when considering bed height. “The space between the top of the mattress and the floor should not put pressure on [your] joints while getting up or out of bed,” Karim says. “If your hips and knees are aligned and your feet are flat on the floor when sitting on the mattress, you are choosing the right bed!”

When it comes to the rest of the room, Karim likes to keep things cohesive and organized, preferring bedside tables at both ends. She also likes a seating area when space – a bench at the end of the bed, a chair in a corner, or a relaxation area – allows for easier transitions into bed. Your last words on bedroom design? Make it personal, comfortable and beautiful.
